ESL competencies, their key features and their evaluation criteria:

           

ESL 1 To write text: 

            Key Features

             -The student prepares to write using strategies.

             -The student composes a text using strategies.

             -The student revises his-her own text using strategies.

            Evaluation criteria

              -Coherent message that is pertinent to the topic and the instruction given.

              -Words spelled correctly as found in: open-ended models and resources.

              -Final product that takes into account the intended audience.

            ESL 2 To reinvest understanding of oral and written texts:

            Key features

              -The students prepares to read a text using strategies.

              -The students understands a written text using strategies.

              -The student caries out a meaningful task using strategies.

            Evaluation criteria

              -Written demonstration of understanding of key elements and overall meaning.

              -Presentation of a personalized final product that follows the instructions for

                carrying the task.

 

Evaluation tools: Self-evaluation grid and an observation grid.(see annexes)

 

Cultural awareness: Students will learn about some other ways of living, depending on

                                    their heroes.(Heroes are not treated the same way in USA in like

                                    other countries.)

 

Functional Language& language conventions: Theme-related vocabulary, connecting

                                                                                words, word order, punctuation,

                                                                                verb tenses.

 

ESL strategies: Plan, use resources, use what you know, take notes, scan for information

                           cooperate, go for the general meaning, take-risk.

 

Cross-curricular competencies : Intellectual--To use information

                                                      Personal and social—To cooperate with others

                                                      Communication-related-- to communicate appropriately.

                                                      Methodological—To adapt effective work method.
